What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic depression, is a major affective or mood disorder characterized by manic or hypomanic episodes. In more simplistic terms, it is a disorder defined by major changes in mood which are accompanied by bouts of high energy. These episodic states can involve sleeplessness, hallucinations, psychosis, delusions, and paranoid rage. The severity of each mood episode can range from mild to severe, and they may occur gradually or suddenly within a period of days or weeks.
If mood episodes occur four or more times in a year, this is referred to as rapid cycling. Rapid cycling, however, is different from more frequent moment-to-moment episodes, which can occur with bipolar disorder or other mood disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Along with these shifts in mood, patients suffering from bipolar disorder may also experience disturbances in thinking, distortions of perception, and/or impairment of social functioning.
What are the Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?
Because there are several different types of bipolar disorder, the symptoms can vary based on type and severity. Some symptoms of bipolar disorder may include:
- Mania or hypomania
- Major depressive episode
- Anxiety or melancholy
- Decreased sleep
- Racing thoughts
- Poor decision making
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts
When to Get Help for Bipolar Disorder
Oftentimes, people with bipolar disorder may not recognize how much their mood instability disrupts their daily lives. They may enjoy the feelings of euphoria and the boost in energy. However, this high energy is always accompanied by an emotional crash that leaves the individual feeling deeply depressed and exhausted.
If you are experiencing several of the symptoms of bipolar disorder, it may be time to speak with your doctor or mental health professional about treatment options.
At Miramont Behavioral Health, we offer multiple treatment options for individuals with bipolar disorder. For more information on how we can help you get your symptoms under control, call us today.
